"Tools" staying selected while making other actions... (#930)

Recently I have had a lot of difficulty trying to select edges for filleting two adjacent solids. The difficulty arises because partway through the selection process I need to rotate or translate the model to be able to "see" the next edge to select. When I choose the rotate or translate tools, the fillet tool and those selections already made disappear. Is there something I am missing here, or is it meant to work like that? A package I used in another life allowed me to zip off to the toolbar to select a translation or zoom tool, and when finished with it, the previous modelling tool was still current, as were any selections already made. Anyone care to comment? Regards, Ian Kirby. Wollongong NSW Australia

Hello Ian Just use the scroll wheel of your mouse to rotate / zoom as required. This shouldn't effect your selections. All the best Nick

Thanks, Nick. What about if one NEEDS to translate/rotate an object in order to be able to make the next selection? Is there a way to do this without losing one's previously selected data? Regards, Ian Kirby. Wollongong NSW Australia

Hello Ian Sorry but I must be missing your point, if you use the middle mouse button you can translate, rotate and zoom view whilst maintaining existing selections. All the best Nick

Thankyou Nick, My fault! I don't have a mouse, and use the trackpad on my Macbook, which I have just learned how to drive (in Viacad). One needs to be a bit like a pianist, using several fingers, and several sides of one's brain, but I have made it work. Thanks for your patience. Regards, Ian Kirby. Wollongong NSW Australia

Hello Ian No problem. I can't recommend a mouse with a wheel enough, they improve your productivity immensely. All the best Nick

Hello Ian When you are using the fillet tool and you want to rotate or move the object to get a better view of your object, you do not want to use the rotate or translate tools. These tools will actually rotate or move the part. What you want to do is use the dynamic rotate tool to rotate your view of the part or the dynamic pan tool to move your view of the part. however, regardless of the tool you change to you will lose the existing tool you are currently using. Nick is correct in recommending a wheel mouse. The wheel mouse allows you to use the dynamic rotate, dynamic pan and zoom in and out with out switching tools. Without one, you will need to take care in setting your view of the object in the proper angle before selecting the fillet tool, so that you can have access to the edges you need without moving the view after you select the fillet tool.

Hello All You can also change your display mode to wireframe to allow you to select an edge on the reverse side of an object, just make sure you keep the shift key held down if you do this whilst attempting to select multiple edges. All the best Nick

Thanks Todd and Nick, I understand the need to use dynamic views rather than model moves. It just took me a while to work out then remember to hold down the shift key through the dynamic viewing process!! Regards, Ian Kirby. Wollongong NSW Australia

You can also set the object display info to transparent.
I find it easier...
