I'm working on a project that involves (...to a small degree) a bit of 'civil'-engineering type of work... For this, can anyone advise how I could develop solid models for: a.) the irregular shape of 'earth' works..... (?) b.) 'cut / fit' rock for retaining walls.... (?) Jim (V/C 2/D 3/D V8 for Mac....)

Strata 3d FOTO 3D CX and a camera set-up can convert images into 3d "mesh" models.
There is also a free service online (you need a digital camera, obviously),
http://www.my3dscanner.com/ Good luck.

Tem's remarks reminded me of the "Arc 3D" service, which appears to work like my3Dscanner.com.
http://www.arc3d.be/ You create a project, and take multiple photos of the object, terrain, whatever, all at the same zoom setting, and incorporating some discernable features, then upload them to the site. They've automated the feature recognition, which evaluates feature triangulation and returns .obj surfaces and textures from your pix. If I were doing it with terrain, I'd scatter some bright, differently-coloured objects, maybe children's blocks or similar about the site, to contrast strongly in the photos. I've used Arc 3D a couple of times, and considering the pictures I'd submitted, the results were impressive, but the my3Dscanner site looks more encouraging and informative. At the price, try both!
