Has anyone been able to do anything with Viewpoint Media on the Mac? I can't even get their website to work so I am not inclined to start working with it.

The reason I asked is somebody just sent me an eDrawing (and it was beautiful and easy to work with) and I am anxious to improve my 3D (technical) presentations.

eDrawings really are very good, aren't they !

Is there any way to license the export format

Hehe! Now yer talking!! :D

Shark talking with Solidworks? That would be a great move imo. It's already pretty painless to export files say as IGES that will talk fairly easily with SW's. 'Product Data Management' (PDM) is the buzzword is it not?

It works more than fine, it works superbly. I used it all the way through the last couple of years when writing reports. In fact I actually think models look better unrendered in the Mac viewer!

It's just crap that SW's cant get their act together to make a Mac version of SW's. But hey-ho Uncle Tim comes to the rescue instead :cool:

eDrawing Viewer IS a great application, but you need the Publisher (free) or the Pro version (about $600) to generate the content for the viewer. The Pro version is included in Solidworks Office Pro and Premium, but not in the basic Solidworks version. There are other versions that support Pro/e etc, but none for VC or Shark, and all the publishers are Windows only.

For that kind of money, you might be better off with Acrobat Pro Enhanced (which would support ACIS) for publishing to Acrobat Reader but again, Windows only.

Have you ever tried web publish in Shark?

Yes I'm actually trying to do it right now as we speak! (but via 3DS Max, because shark/ VC dont support the W3D format (which it should!! ;) )

I agree with you on the acrobat thing to a point, because the SW's viewer has a far better view than Acrobat at the moment, but yes and also worth mentioning that the SW's viewer's extra features aren't as 'extra' as they make out IMHO.

It is conceivable that there could be a VC/Shark viewer by stripping away all of the modeling tools, plus some general streamlining, but I'm not sure it would be free as there is licensed content for file translation and viewing that would still have to be paid by someone.

since in the meanwhile Autodesks DWF is free... it's maybe worth to dip into too:

same process as in Acrobat 3D, i.e. 'print' 2D/3D data from every (CAx) app to the DWF printer for generating a DWF file.

fwiw, I've had no problems opening up VC files saved a dwg files in eDrawings.

I do not know anything about Viewpoint Media, I am just trying to communicate with my clients so I am looking for a solution.

I have been exporting DXF and DWG into eDrawings (per Tom's suggestion) and "some" parts look great, spin etc. just what I was hoping for. Unfortunately not all the parts import. I have not figured out what is going on.

Too many parts? Too complex? Errors in the files?

I have to say that I am thrilled that there might be a solution!

You may need to export as a R12 DWG/DXF. After R12 AutoDesk used the ACIS kernel and supported embedded SAT data in the file. When we export, we export SAT whenever possible because of its precision. eDrawings may not support the embedded SAT data and may be ignoring it. For R12 DWG we automatically export the facet list instead of SAT.

I still have not had total success. Only parts of my models import. Some look like they import but don't move. I will continue to experiment. It looks promising.

I will be glad to send you a couple of files directly if you would like. The notes I have found on the web imply that DWG or DXF parts should view fine. Right now, for me, some parts of each model do.

Do all your drawings inport OK? I am having no luck at all. Anybody else? I cannot get anything to rotate.

Art, I just through the motor assembly (in Shark examples) at eDrawings (again DWG, R2004) worked great. Even retained original colours! :D
