Good day. I'm not a complete newbie to cad but I'm fairly new to Viacad. I've used Sketchup for most of my drawings and one of the things that it does it to create "groupings" or create "components". If you make a grouping into a component, if you change one of the components, all other components that are copied from that first component are changed so that all components are affected equally. If for instance you have a component "Part A" that you copy 5 times and you change any one of the "Part A" components to red, all "Part A" components are changed to red. If you lengthen one of them, they all lengthen equally and automatically.

Is there something similar in the Viacad world?

There's a command called linear duplicate. It has a button for associate with the original part A. For instance, you have a solid and you duplicate that part 5 times 1" apart and say you extend a length of the solid or offset a wall, the other will ideally update too but it doesn't do it automatically. You will have to use "Resolve Links" so all the 5 duplicates get the same change as Part A. I don't think that works with colors however that I know of. I normally use the associate feature in a command call polar duplicate. Hope this gives you an insight for what you are trying to do. I'm not sure if that works with a grouping of components.

I wasn't looking exactly for color per se, just the fact that when you designate an item a "component" each like-component will update as the individual is updated. If I make a component box 4 x 4 x 4 and I copy it 10 times. and then change one of those to be 4 x 4 x 6, in the Sketchup world, each of the other components would also change to be the same dimensions.

I was just looking if that was something that Viacad does.

Another related question. I work in the stair-building industry. If I wanted to create a "warehouse" of stair components to drag and drop into my drawings, would I just create a file with all of those components in it or is there a "warehouse" feature that I'm not calling the correct name?

Thanks

hi, there is a symbol manager in the concept explorer. Read in the manual about "symbol manager"

I'm looking for a place to store items that I will use in other drawings. Can items be added to the "Symbol Manager" I don't see where I can do that.

Thanks

I can see what you are talking about in the manual, but I can't find the option when I try to do it.

you can store a drawing with your item in the following place:

Mac: /Users/<yourlogin>/Library/Application Support/com.encore.viacadprov9/ Symbols
PC: c:\ Documents and Settings\<yourlogin>\Local Settings\Application Data\Punch!\ViaCADPro

this is for version 9 and 10. I don't know if higher versions have the same path

Not exactly components, but in ViaCAD there is an associativity that goes along 3D objects and their 2D counter parts and you also have instances of objects.

By right clicking an object and selecting "Duplicate Part As Instance" you create a new instance of the original object.

When you modify the original part all of its instances are updated automatically.

I made you this quick and dirty doc in Google Drive explaining instances in ViaCAD.

Quick Explanation of Instances (Google Drive Doc)

Hope it helps...

Thank you for the idea and the Google doc! Very helpful.

One thing that I found though is that the items will only update if I move them. All of the changes that I make with the "parent" will update, but only if I move the parent or potentially one of the "offspring". Is there an automatic "refresh" that should be taking place or is that an option I haven't turned on?

One thing that I'm finding that I both appreciate and despise (😁) is that Viacad is powerful. But it uses naming and phrases that I don't necessarily think should be named as such so I'm learning terms that are proper, but different than I would name them.

That path is not available in v12. Thanks anyway.

I tried the linear duplicate which will duplicate both 2D and 3D objects. However the "associative duplicate" doesn't come up as an option in 2D mode (which could be logical).

Hi there
This is how I save symbols.
Before saving I use the remove links under the edit menu tool otherwise I seem to get untidy symbols.
Then the save as symbol feature under file.
