FluidX3D is an insanely efficient and small program for simulating fluids by using OpenCL.
So it only uses the graphics card.
It beats every commercial software by factors and is free at the moment.

Very interesting, thanks for sharing the link!

It's always amazing to see how far the technology and hardware has come. Earlier in my career I specialized in integrating CAD with CFD and CEM/RCS (stealth) for ATF/F22 so to see this all happening on a consumer PC is just fantastic.

The license is a bit restrictive ie no commercial use.

I would suspect that some Open Source/FOSS devs make their software non-commercial because of an axe to grind, democratization/philosophy, and so on.

But, plenty are flexible, I hope, if I'm holding out hope for humanity loosening its pervasive propensity to hoard resources and knowledge. I can imagine that a reasonable donation to the dev or to a software cause dear to the dev might open up discussion for exceptions licensing if the use cases also touch the dev in a heartwarming way. Proprietarization has limits, some quite debilitating for all involved, inevitably.
