I am currently using ViaCAD 7 Pro on a 32 bit Windows 7 and I have 4GB Ram.

I would like to upgrade to 64 bit with 8 GB Ram at least.

I may have the new notebook before I have ViaCAD 8 Pro as it is not yet available. Will the 32 bit ViaCAD 7 Pro run on the 64 bit Windows 7?

With more RAM, will I be able to open bigger files or only the same but faster?

On my current system ViaCAD 7 Pro is performing rather well, but I have had problems with opening a complex import that used up the memory.

32-bit apps can access ~2GB only, regardless if under a 32-bit or 64-bit Windows. More working memory does in general not make the system faster but allows apps to access more working memory for e.g. loading bigger files... at least if supported.

Lenovo ThinkPad Notebook: X220
Intel® Core i5 2520LM 2.50GHz Processor,
8GB DDR3 Memory (1 x 4GB - 2 Slot) 1333 MHZ FSB,
Windows 7 professional 64 bit
This one has a battery life of 15 hours

I'm very pleased with the performance of my MacBook Air 1.8 Ghz i7 and 4 GB. I don't experience any slowness, as it's the SSD drive that makes a world of difference and not the processor (they are fast enough, these days). I don't know if you went for an ordinary hard drive, but personally I will never go back to those drives for my computer. Even a computer of a few years old will be several times faster with SSD drive. I didn't experience any problems with "only" 4 GB, but I don't really have big files I work with (biggest file is 54 MB).

Check out the new Fusion drives on an iMac. :cool:

I would really love to hear about your real world experience of those 15 hours of battery life. I can't believe a Windows machine can really do that. I guess 5 hours max.

Well I am very pleased with the Lenovo.
I have set in msconfig the processor to use 4.
Where ViaCAD took 90 seconds to boot on the old system, it now takes less than 20 for the first time, thereafter 3 secs.
Everything is so much faster.
