There's eye dropper and deep select, but not general selection, that I can see. Am I missing it somewhere?

Hi, Murray

Yes,
The selection is in the shortcuts --> tools--> Selection.

Tim, if you're reading this, I'd so love to have the selection tool available on a right button mouse click too! Actually woulndt it be great to have any tool freely assignable to a right mouse button?! :D

PS thank you Murray for bringing this question up. It was much needed :D

Then I must be referring to another tool then. :)

My computer is away from me the moment.

Errrrrm.....Paul, no, it's not. Or at least not on 2D/3D! Perhaps on Pro?

It would be great to have the select tool on the right click contextual menu!

Steinberg's Cubase music software had tools available on the right button on the mouse (back in the days of the Atari Ste ). This was a great feature as it really sped up productivity. Tim?

(sorry for the long reply- but this issue was really bugging me, and it still is. Perhaps I can find it as a key command?)

Yep. Thanks for the tip Jason. Finally got there, and placed it on the 'k' key for now. :)

If you have a multibutton mouse, assign one of the keys to whatever keystroke you use for the select tool shortcut. This is an incredible productivity booster that I have been using since the days of Velum 2D (the mid 90's).

Hi Nick :)

Yes, I did this yesterday- but on the keyboard (K), as my mouse only has three buttons, and it has sped things up a bit -although I really should assign it to a key on the opposite side of the keyboard.

I still want Tim though, to consider placing it at the top of the list available at the contextual menu (right click).

Tim?

Select as a right click option feels kind of like the long way to get to the command. If Select is in a contextual menu item you have to right click (or control click) mouse down a list, and then click a second time. All that effort might be more than just flicking your mouse to the top left of the screen (muscle memory) and a single click to select the tool.

I guess part of the issue for you is that you are using a trackball, (logitech trackman) which makes it harder (my experience many years ago) to do large movements. If your trackman has a wheel button that can flick left and right you can assign the left, right, and center clicks different functions. Logitechs Mac drivers are renowned for their limited functionality and general crapyness so if you haven't already you might want to install USB Overdrive which gives you much more control over the mouse.

Bellow is a copy of the shortcuts I have assigned. Most of them are arranged on the left hand side or bottom row of the keyboard so that I can keep my right hand on the mouse. Remember that you can use both upper and lower case, so I use the c key to show and flip the work plane, and the C key to hide that big ugly arrow.

You are absolutely right, and I agree, the drivers are shite, so I don't use them, preferring to use the generic driver already included within Mac OS X.

But yes Nick, you are right, and for me clicking twice is no big deal, as I only need to move the ball a fraction of an inch to the right. :)

I have looked at usb overdrive before- very good, but it was expensive enough that in the end I didn't bother with it (I actually was considering usb overdrive to work with my old Space Pilot!)

Thanks for the pdf though. :D

Just for a mo .. back to the topic at hand

>> The selection is in the shortcuts --> tools --> Selection

Now this is another one of those things that have irked me for many years

There is of course a reason why nobody can find this setting until they're told about it ..

.. Selection should be under .. I don't know, let's see .. perhaps "Selection" ?

WHY IS IT UNDER "TOOLS" ?

It's not a bloody tool, it's for selecting stuRf !

Now, excuse me for ranting .. but I JUST DON'T SEE THE LOGIC

Also, for goodness sake !

Why don't you put the tool icons in the Short Cuts Manager ?

It ain't rocket science .. people have to connect icons with functions

Besides, some poor prick's spent months of his life making the damn things ; )

Rulez? There are NO rules!! This is Tim's software! :D:D

You'll also find loads of other stuff in shortcuts that have duplicate names, but are assigned to different functions completely unassociated with their names. I'm now wondering if ViewBall is actually in there, but is just assigned to something completely different.

fwiw, I've had a bad VC day- with the dreaded spinning beach ball of death appearing every time I either zoom in or select, or both. I almost punched my computer screen today with frustration!

Vectorworks Designer, with it's Parasolid kernel, is beginning to look very tempting these days! :p

Brilliant idea!!

AND, while you're at it, write a little bit of code that when I mouse over a tool, not only does its description appear, but in brackets, a reminder of the key that the tool is assigned to. :D
