Hi, I am new to via cad but have done some 2d work that I saved, now when I go to open the files I get a message saying I do not have access.??

Never happened to me, unless I have some unsupported carachter on the path for access the file (shark-viacad have trouble with , ", and some other characters), for example, I can no open import a file whose name have an "", or even can not export a file If a layer or part have this letter on their names

Other cause can be if you don't have privileges to access file's directory
