Is there a built in function that would let me select parts and then change them into copies of another part or group of parts?

Similar to how the eyedropper works with styles and colors?

For example I have a model that has dozens of boxes- that need to be split into two boxes length wise.

I see how to split them with the split tool.

But is there a way I can replace the instances of the old boxes with the 2 new boxes?

Don't know of such a function. I don't think you can split all boxes in one go. You can resize them all together in one order, using the data field in the Inspector, but I don't know if you can all split them.

What I would do: If they are on a path, or a path you can create, you can just select the two new boxes at the beginning of the path, then use the Linear Array or Path Duplicate tool to duplicate them with the required amount or spacing.
