I keep creating errors that force me to resolve links. But I am not sure what why these link errors form. I start off with a cube. Then I use a line drawn across one end. Then I extrude the bottom off so that I get a trapezodal shaped object. BUT now if I try and join that to a group and move it I get regen error. But If I go in and resolve the links the error goes away. What is happening?

What is your setting in preferences for auto resolve?
