Hi, I am trying to put text on goblet and keep getting an error message ? "The chain to be swept is parallel to the path" I don't have a clue what that means or how to fix. Watching a video called Imprinting text with ViaCad & Shark by Tim.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljjuNkD47jk But he does not talk about nor have the problem I do. I would sure appreciate any help. Thanks, Jester3775

hi, i could not find the video, but did you change the text into curves? select the text, do right click -> change object type and take "curves". next move your text curves in front of the goblet with gripper and apply "project curve surface"

Hi rokoko, Thanks for the response. I tried what you suggested, I think !, but upon right clicking I do not have the choice "change object type" The link to the video I was watching is here:

hi, meanwhile i got the video. i realized that "change object type" is no longer necessary for a imprint projection of text. most important will be to move the text to the right place and holding the option key while doing a "project curve surface" be sure to pick a long enough distance as vector towards the surface

Hi rokoko, Not sure what you mean by "move the text to the right place" I believe I got the part about holding the option key and project curve surface ? Not sure what "pick a long enough distance as vector towards surface" means Thanks, Jester3775

Hi rokoko,
Well I watched the video and tried to follow along. I now think ? I have text on goblet but it is not following contour. I will go back and look at the original video and see if I can figure that part out. For whatever it's worth I have ViaCad v10 with the power pack, not shark. Apparently alot of the things are the same ? There is definitely a learning curve with this stuff !
Thanks,
Jester3775

Below is another video imprinting text on a non planar surface and offsetting that might help.

Hi Tim,
Thanks for the reply. The video you suggested was the one I found to begin with (I think it's yours) and was trying to share with rokoko. I am not sure if it's because you are using shark but my ViaCad 10 with power pack doesn't seem to behave the same way. I am stuck on the video not even a minute in and am lost. I am sending a pic. of the error message I seem to get most of the time. I am not going to embarrass myself any more than I already have by telling you how long I have been working on this one thing... any thoughts ? Thanks Jester3775

Hi rokoko,
I did not think to do that, didn't even know you could. I did send a screen shot and thought that would help but...
Here is the file I am working with. I am basically trying to apply daughter's name to goblet along outside in upper curved area. I just upgraded to ViaCAD Pro 10 with Powerpack last night thinking that my lesser version was maybe the problem, either way more is better ! Thanks for your time. Jesse

hi,
what i would recommend:
1) delete your text (dont worry about error messages)
2) in concept explorer do a right click in free space and uncheck selected only
3) in concept explorer delete all parts with numbers 9637 and above
4) in a top view add a new text
5) activate gripper, grab the red handle and move the text to the right
6) with green handle move the text up
7) go to left side view, take the blue handle and move text up
8) go to trimetric view, choose project curve surface, hold down option key (to imprint) and select text and solid, pick two points along z-axis
9) finally you can delete the faces in the back of the goblet with deep select tool

Hi rokoko,
Thanks for taking the time to look over my file and try to help me. I had trouble figuring out how to delete text. The concept explorer must of somehow showed misc. things I had inadvertently added that should not have been there ?
I tried to follow the directions as accurately as I could but I think there are some details missing that I should probably know. I did kind of get some text added but when trying to select text and raise as it shows in the one video from Tim I find that the letters are not working as they should. The inside cutouts of R, a & e are treated as part of selection when the should be hollow. Can't seem to figure out how to fix that. Any ideas ?
Thanks,
Jesse

Hi Jesse
I'll make a quick video for you, pretty much along the line rokoko has suggested.

Link below to a video using your example file to project text onto a curved shape. Once projected you can offset the face to inset or protrude the outline on the curved surface.
Video Link I think we may need to add the Option to embed as a pull down which might make it easier to see/access.

another option for an imprint to the first surface only (not every surface on axis) would be helpful

Hi Tim, Wow that was really awesome of you to make that video, I'm impressed and thankful. I will have to post when I get one made up. I think I will need to start over though. I think thru all the screwing around I was doing I messed up the file and don't really know how to fix. There is a weird line in part of it that I have no idea how it got there. I can't seem to select it by itself to try and cut ? Seems like that is the term you folks use. I like delete better but... live and learn !

To avoid projecting to both sides of the cup, place the text inside the cup and project out to the surface.
