Text Extrusion - How Do I

Using VaCAD2D/3D v10 I want to add extruded text to the face of an object for 3-D printing. I can not figure how to do it. I have created the text with the text tool. Tried changing the object type to all the options and nothing will extrude with the extrude tool. I found sometimes the text is grouped and ungrouping does nothing to allow the extrude tool to work. There is no option to change the type to a column or solid in ViaCAD2d/3D.
The closest I got was to change type to a mesh but then I don't see how to mesh extrude up the Z axis.
Searching the forum brings up some Shark options or old versions of ViaCAD2D/3D, nothing seems to relate to version 10.
A straight forward explanation is what I need.

Are you adding the text to a flat geometry or another shape?

Right now I am doing it to a flat surface. I found the YouTube video about using the project on to a surface. Took me a few times through the video and some searching to find the Surface Utility/Project Curved Surface that is under the modify menu.
After some playing I am getting this to work for what I am doing.
