Hi,
I want to shorten objects and then reunite them. How do I do that?
See attached screenshot.

you can do a split solid:
1) select "infinite plane" and place an infinite plane on your solid
2) split the solid at the plane
3) move part two into part one with gripper
4) add both solids

You can use the move face tool to move the end faces of the object along the axis of the central cylinder without cutting and reuniting.

There is no doubt about it, the tools of the Solid-Direct-Edit menue (Push-Pull icon) are really powerfull but I don't see how to solve a problem as shown by iPC1-Markus without cutting, when the long and the short part build one objekt.
Yesterday I had a similar problem, I had to shorten an object between 2 points (i.e. the pic, from the 57,xxx mm to 50,0 mm) without changing the rest.

Not push/pull, move face tool. I'm on PC, so if you're Mac and Mac's different I won't know, but hold shift and select ALL of the faces that are going to be moved, one at a time won't work, and define the transformation.
